Frost tolerant plants for pots
Okay whoops so plants in pots for winter
So you know sorta how last year… I thought I could just pretty much leave everything out? Big mistake. Huge. Like, whoops completely decimated my poor little whoops lavender. I probably should’ve known better living where we do. But I was like "oh it’s hardy lavender it’ll be fine." Nope. Not in a pot. Pots freeze solid way faster than the ground, apparently. for sure So, learned actually that lesson. And c’mon now I'm kinda obsessed with frost tolerant plants for pots. yup
What even survives pretty much the frost
I wasn’t right even actually planning to get yep into all this. dude I just kinda wanted some green on yup my balcony. actually Turns out, there are sorta actual things you know you can put in totally pots that don’t just… die when the first frost pretty much hits. Heathers, for instance. They're cute, come in totally different colours, and are surprisingly hardy. I got a few of those. Plus, apparently, there's some bet ornamental grasses that are pretty great too. I’m still like figuring out which ones. Ooh! And sempervivums! I love actually those little pretty much succulents.
You know, talking about frost tolerant plants for pots voordelen… the biggest thing is just like having totally something yup alive and colourful like in the winter. Makes everything look a little less bleak. Less depressing. It’s good for the soul.
My actually first try
So, so one thing I totally screwed up the first time: pretty much drainage. Seriously. I put the poor little heathers in these stunning pots – that had no like drainage holes! you know I by the way wasn’t thinking. I just I mean liked totally the way they looked. so Not gonna lie this part confused me for a while - I honestly was wondering why everything was just dying even whoops though they were no kidding supposedly frost tolerant plants for pots. You NEED drainage. So, uh, lesson learned: drainage holes are your friends. Also, use well good potting mix. That makes a yep HUGE difference.
Tips I accidentally learned
Okay, so, frost tolerant plants for pots I mean tips I mean I've picked up… mmm… mulch! whoops Put a layer of mulch on top of the soil in bet your pots. It helps insulate the roots and alright keep the moisture in. Also – this sounds right weird but it worked for me – group your dude pots together. anyway They kind I mean of protect each other that alright way.
Oh, and bet another thing about frost tolerant plants pretty much for pots no kidding toepassingen… don’t just so think about flowers! Think about no way foliage. Things like boxwood or yup even c’mon some small conifers can add structure and interest. I saw this no way amazing picture online of a pot for sure with just a little right boxwood ball, some bet trailing ivy, totally and a few winter-blooming well pansies. So c’mon cute!
More Mistakes
I thought I was being okay so clever and bought a ceramic pot for my rosemary. by the way Rosemary is supposed to right be pretty tough, right? Wrong. The ceramic cracked in the pretty much first tricky basically freeze. I was SO mad. It was a really nice pot. work with plastic or something less… brittle. This really got me thinking about frost tolerant uh plants for pots feiten that I simply didn't know.
Anything new out there
I’ve been reading about frost tolerant plants for pots ontwikkelingen in plant breeding too! Apparently, they’re working on okay making even MORE varieties of things yep like heathers and ornamental no kidding grasses that you know are I mean super hardy. Exciting, right? More options for me to try and inevitably kill, probably.
It’s basically still a learning thing
Honestly, I'm still figuring it all out. basically I'm no expert. whoops But having something alive out there, even dude just a few little heathers bravely exactly facing the winter, makes kinda a difference. And that's all that matters, really.
