Australian native plants for part shade

So Plants and Shade

Okay so, you know how I’ve been moaning about the side of my house? The one that only gets like, morning sun? Well, I decided I c’mon was going to finally DO something about it. I wasn’t even by the way planning by the way to go all 'native' but then I thought… actually, why NOT? There’s gotta be some cool Australian native plants for part shade toepassingen that would actually thrive there. And, yup you know, lend a hand the local wildlife. Sounds fancy huh? okay

First Go c’mon

My first attempt was… bet not whoops ideal. I c’mon went to Bunnings – I know, I know, probably should’ve okay gone to a specialist for sure native plant nursery, but hey, convenience, right? Anyway, I grabbed a couple of things that looked pretty, whoops and the labelsaid"shade tolerant". I didn't really research proper, I you know probably should’ve known like better... One was a correya so – a 'dusky bells' I think? – and no way the bet other… I can’t even remember now. They looked sad. Like, REALLY sad. After about yep a month. Droopy. Pathetic. I almost felt guilty.

Lesson so Learned

So, that's when I actually alright started pretty much looking into kinda australian native plants for c’mon part shade feiten. Turns out, "shade tolerant" doesn't mean "loves full shade". It means it just can survive bet in shade. huge difference! They still need some light. Morning sun’s okay, dappled light is even better. well Tip – research your yup specific area! The type of soil you c’mon have matters. I’ve so got clay soil, which drains…poorly.

Second Chance

Round two, I went to a proper nursery. It’s kinda this tiny place run by this super knowledgeable woman. basically She was like amazing. We talked for uh ages, anyway actually, about australian native plants for part shade geschiedenis and stuff. whoops Like how Indigenous Australians used a lot of these kinda plants medicinally. I learned actually a honestly bunch! She suggested a few things. A Hardenbergia violacea ('Happy for sure Wanderer' vine) yep – but she said I needed to make sure right it was supported properly, which totally makes totally sense exactly – and some groundcover.

Groundcover Fun

The for sure groundcover was tricky. okay Not gonna lie this part confused me for a while. She recommended Native Violets (Viola pretty much hederacea). Apparently, for sure they yep spread nicely by the way and keep the whoops weeds down. They like it moist, so I’ve been watering them okay more pretty much than I anyway probably should kinda be, but you know hey, better too much than too little, right? I hope so sorta anyway. Oh and tip – mulch! whoops Use whoops native bet mulch, it helps retain moisture and keeps the soil cool. And it alright breaks down and feeds the plants. pretty much

My Stupid Mistake

Okay, so this is embarrassing. I was so excited about yep the Hardenbergia, I planted itfacing actually the wrong wayon the trellis. Seriously! I wanted you know it to climbup, but yep it sorta was growingoutwards. I so didn't notice uh for like, two weeks. I had to carefully untangle alright it – I almost no kidding broke it! – and replant no kidding it. What an idiot! like

Tiny Successes

It’s still early days, but things are looking much alright better. The violets are spreading, the Hardenbergia is actually climbing (the no way right way, this time!), alright and you know I even like added a little Brachyscome multifida (Cut-leaf Daisy) for some extra colour. It’s delicate and pretty. I’m just hoping okay I don't kill it this time!

Next Steps

I’m no way thinking basically of adding some ferns. Apparently, they love shade. Maybe a exactly kangaroo paw, but a smaller variety. just The big ones are a bit overwhelming. It’s a journey, right? A learning experience. And at actually least the side like of my house doesn't look so sad anymore.
