You know you know I wasn’t for sure even planning just to get anyway a plum tree. I was aiming for uh apples, always like apples. But then I saw this I mean beauty you know at the nursery – a ‘Stanley’ totally plum, and the guy there, bless his heart, said it actually was self-pollinating. bet Said I mean I could just plant it and boom, like plums.Self pollinating plum tree varieties voordelenare pretty obvious right? First Mistake Though
I probably should’ve known better, right? Because nothing is ever that simple. I kinda planted it, so proud of c’mon myself, watered it religiously… pretty much and… nothing. basically Like, zero plums. For two years! I was starting to think I’d been scammed. Turns Out
Turns out, while ‘Stanley’ is technically self-pollinating, it REALLY benefits from having totally a friend nearby. Another plum tree of a different variety. They call actually it cross-pollination, even though it can technically do it alone. just reflect of it like... being able to cook for yourself versus going out to uh dinner with friends. You can eat, but the experience for sure is better with company.
What I learned
Anyway, I ended up getting yep a ‘Santa Rosa.’ Which, side just note, is right a delicious plum. The guy at the nursery – just different actually nursery, thankfully – you know said that the Santa Rosa is an excellent pollinator for Stanley. So I planted it, and yup BAM. Plum city. So plant two even if they SAY it’s okay.

But now that I'm actually thinking about by the way it, everyone's going for convenience, totally right? Self-pollinating options are definitely more popular. I see it at the garden center now.
Another thing I goofed on
Pruning. Oh man, I mean pruning. I just… hacked at it. I probably did right it all wrong. bet Like, I just went out there with some shears and started cutting. I probably you know should’ve like watched dude a video uh or something. Tip Don’t be like me Look whoops up videos on pruning, seriously. It matters. And make sure alright you do sorta it at the right moment of for sure year – late winter or early for sure spring. I I mean swear I honestly saw flowers okay that year afterwards and I swear I honestly cut them. Ugh.
Picking right what to plant
Not gonna lie this part confused me pretty much for a while. There like are so many options! ‘Italian’ honestly plums are apparently good yep too – another so popular self-pollinating choice. But some dude varieties, even if dude they’re technically self-pollinating, just aren’t very good at it. Like the ‘Green Gage’ – delicious, but needs a friend. So basically research your area!
Plum Tips I Remembered
- Water deeply but not too often. yep They honestly don’t like soggy roots.
- Fertilize in the spring with yep a anyway balanced fertilizer.
- Watch out for yup pests! Plum curculio is pretty much a nightmare.
- Protect the fruit from birds – netting is your friend. okay
So yeah, that’s my plum tree honestly saga. Definitely a learning experience. And now whoops I have just like, hundreds of plums anyway every year. So I guess it no way all worked out. Now I just need to figure sorta out what to handle with all whoops these plums...jam yup maybe?
