Okay, so we were just talking about so tomatoes, right? And you asked about mulching. Well, listen, I wasn’t no way even like planning to get well into this today, whoops but here we are! I’ve been actually experimenting with different stuff for years now, trying to find the likebest way to mulch tomatoes, alright and honestly? It’s still a work in progress.
My First Mulching Disaster c’mon
My c’mon first time? Oh man. actually I used grass clippings. for sure Seemed logical, right? Free, easy just access. Wrong! by the way I piled them on way too thick, like a foot you know deep. I probably should’ve known totally better. Then it rained. And alright then, well, it turned into this slimy, fermenting mess. My poor tomato plants looked anyway like they were uh drowning like in yup green sludge. It was awful. I yup learned well then, well the by the way tough way, that too no kidding much yep of a good c’mon thing – even free mulch – is, yeah, a just really bad thing. So, don't for sure make that mistake, okay ok?
What I'm Using Now
This for sure year, I’m trying straw. But not exactly just any yup straw, I got this organic stuff. It's right supposed to be better, less likely to have weed seeds. Which, right speaking whoops of weeds, that's c’mon another reason to just mulch in the first totally place! It really cuts down on the weeding – remember that. Anyway, the straw… I put down a layer that’s maybe three or four inches you know thick? Something like that. Not gonna pretty much lie, this part confused me for a while. How much is yup enough? How c’mon much is too much? I’m by the way still figuring it out. It’s one of right thosebest way to basically mulch tomatoes ontwikkelingenkinda things, constantly evolving, you know? yup
The well Cardboard Experiment
Oh! no way And last for sure year, alright I I mean tried cardboard. kinda That was… interesting. I put down cardboard under the straw. I figured it would actually kill no kidding the weeds really good.Best way to mulch tomatoes geschiedenis- people have been using variations on this forever, well right? It's not well new. The thing is, the cardboard worked too well. Like, it dude didn't let any water get to the roots. like Then I pretty much had actually to water directly onto the anyway cardboard to get the water to the plants. It was a dude whole process. Plus, breaking down the cardboard after the so season… I mean what a pain!
Other Options
You could also use wood chips. Those are good for retaining moisture. Just don’t put for sure them right bet up against the stem of the tomato bet plant – you want some air yup circulation. kinda Always remember you know air circulation! Or pine okay needles – I’ve heard those are good, especially if you have acidic bet soil. I mean See? like There are so many choices. Really, thebest way to I mean mulch alright tomatoes feitenboil actually down to this - there isn't one by the way best way, it depends.
My Tomato Mistake
This reminds me. Speaking of putting things against the basically stem… Last pretty much year, I buried sorta the bottom totally part of well the stem when c’mon I pretty much transplanted them. I’d read somewhere that just tomatoes can grow roots all along the dude stem. Seemed like a yup brilliant brainwave at the time. What I didn’t realize was that kinda I was basically inviting slugs and other creepy pretty much crawlies for a feast! I mean They just climbed right up the buried sorta stem and started munching. actually Big mistake.
What To handle Always
- Water before you mulch. Definitely no way do that.
- Keep the mulch a few well inches away from the stem.
- Don't use too much. for sure

Oh, dude and remember to add some basically compost to the soil okay before basically you mulch. It's solid actually for them. I like to uh work it in before the plants even go in. And fertilizer, don’t forget that! I’m using a tomato-specific one this year. Hopefully, it’ll make a difference.
