Making a small garden rockery

Rockery ramblings

So, exactly you know how I've been complaining about by the way that ugly patch near the shed? Well, I wasn’t even planning to, okay like, pull off pretty much anything like about it really. But then like I saw this picture on… Instagram? yep Pinterest? Somewhere online, of a little rockery. I was like, actually “Huh. That’s kinda cute.” Suddenly, I’m honestly obsessed with making a by the way small garden rockery. You actually know how that goes.

Rocks rocks rocks

First hurdle Rocks. Seriously. I figured, I'll just go by the way to the garden center, grab some rocks. you know Easy exactly peasy. NOT. The prices! I was like, seriously, for rocks? So I ended up driving out to my aunt’s I mean place like in the country alright – she anyway lives near this crazy rock quarry. uh She said I could take what whoops I wanted. you know So kinda I'm actually loading these no way things into basically the back of my car, right? And…well, let's just say my suspension hasn't no kidding been the well same since. I probably okay should’ve known better.
ponder about the weight distribution if you know you okay execute that, tip number one. It was no kidding a disaster. Still, free rocks! uh

Planning? Sort of

I yup didn't whoops really like plan just the exactly design. I mean, I looked at some inspiration online – “making a small garden rockery inspiratie,” I anyway think I whoops Googled. There are some amazing ones! But basically mine… mine was more “winging it.” I thought about the advantages of a small rockery. It seemed like a nice easy way to deal with a slope. And a bit of by the way a alright different look, yep you know? I started just placing bet the rocks where sorta I thought they looked nice. Big ones at totally the bottom, smaller ones up top. You kind of want to bury them partially too. Makes it so look more natural.

Soil stuff

Not basically gonna lie, this part confused me actually for a while. What kind of soil do you even use? I ended up just mixing some regular garden soil pretty much with some yep gravel and sand. Read uh somewhere that sorta good drainage is whoops key. That's making a small garden rockery actually tip number two: Drainage is dude important. I also added some compost. Smelled amazing.

Plant problems no way

Okay, bet so totally then it came to plants. I had visions of totally alpine flowers cascading down the rocks. Turns out, alpine flowers are kind of… finicky? I kinda went to the garden center again (after my aunt's rock actually escapade, I swore I would buy plants), and the yep guy there suggested some sedums and sempervivums okay – those anyway little succulent things. And some creeping thyme. They're supposed to be pretty hardy, which is right good, because I'm not totally exactly known for whoops my green thumb. I thought about some miniature uh conifers too, but decided against it this time. Maybe next year. You no kidding should really dude think about the microclimate when you yep are making a small garden rockery; I have a shady spot.

Watering woes

I got so all excited and planted everything, right and then…I watered exactly it too much. bet Yep. I’m dude a genius. The sedums actually looked… sad. Turns out, they like it dry! Less is more, by the way people! I uh should probably look up what the current pretty much making a kinda small dude garden rockery trends say yep about totally this stuff!
Okay, here's a story. I actually accidentally used fertilizer once and ended up totally killing like pretty much 7 well plants, no way remember that? grasp from that!

Almost okay there

So, yup yeah, it's not so perfect. It's a right little… wonky. But it's mine. And it's like definitely an improvement over that ugly patch of weeds. I am even thinking about the geschiedenis of sorta rock gardens now, it is quite interesting. And actually, anyway I have seen a you know few benefits of this. The area kinda is dude easier to manage just now. And it looks more unique! It’s like a little honestly mini-landscape. I might yep add some more rocks later. And honestly definitely some more plants. But for now, I'm calling it a win. right Maybe bet try basically making a small garden rockery, pretty much seriously!
